Vols lose Richmond for opener

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee will be without sophomore left tackle Drew Richmond for Monday’s season-opener against Georgia Tech.

Head coach Butch Jones announced during his Wednesday press conference that Richmond has been suspended for one game for a violation of team rules, confirming rumors that had been swirling for weeks.

The Vols, who will travel to Atlanta to kick off the season Monday (8 p.m., ESPN), will slide sophomore Marcus Tatum into the starting role at left tackle in Richmond’s absence. Brett Kendrick will start at right tackle.

Tennessee is already without its top offensive tackle. It was announced earlier this year that junior Chance Hall will miss the season with a knee injury that was sustained last year.

Richmond was expected to be an anchor on Tennessee’s offensive line. The Memphis native started six games as a redshirt freshman in 2016.

Tennessee also received the bad news this week that middle linebacker Darrin Kirkland Jr. will miss extensive time due to a meniscus injury.
